  11.                      HAVANA, Cuba (CNN) -- He may not be as famous as
  12.                      the star of "Free Willy," but like the whale in
  13.                      that 1993 movie, a dolphin named Menique has been
  14.                      rescued from treacherous owners and brought to
  15.                      safety -- in this case, Havana's National
  16.                      Aquarium.

  18.                      Animal rights organizations caring for Menique
  19.                      (which, in English, means 'little finger,' or
  20.                      'pinky') eventually plan to release the 7-year-old
  21.                      dolphin back into the waters off Cuba, his
  22.                      original home.

  24.                      Covered in protective lanolin and sprayed with
  25.                      water, Menique (pronounced: men-YEE-kay) arrived
  26.                      on Monday in Cuba from Iquique, Chile, where he'd
  27.                      lived for two years.

  29.                      The 20-hour flight followed a long legal battle to
  30.                      obtain the dolphin's release. Ecologists who won
  31.                      the case said Menique's Chilean owners had kept
  32.                      him under deplorable conditions.

  34.                      "He was so thin you could see his bones through
  35.                      his skin," said South Florida wildlife
  36.                      rehabilitationist Lloyd Brown. "His skin was
  37.                      covered with sores."
  38.  
  39.                      Good chance of survival in wild
  40.  
  41.                      While returning Menique to Cuban waters is the
  42.                      goal, no one can say just how long that will take.
  43.  
  44.                      Releasing sea mammals back into their natural
  45.                      habitat is not easy, but in the case of Menique,
  46.                      there's reason for optimism.

  48.                      Because he lived in the wild for five      
  49.                      years before being captured and sold to
  50.                      Chile, Menique should still be able to remember
  51.                      the basics of fending for himself, an animal
  52.                      expert said.

  54.                      "All the dolphins we've released into the wild
  55.                      have adapted well and joined new pods," says Dr.
  56.                      Celia Guevara, a marine biologist and daughter of
  57.                      Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara.

  59.                      Even after his long ordeal, returning home may be
  60.                      Menique's biggest adventure yet.
